The role of microbial identification, among others, in environmental monitoring, is set out in EU Annex 1. The lecture spans the range from theory to practical application with a focus on microbial biodiversity in cleanroom qualification. Using an EMPQ case study, the importance of accurate identifications as a result of representative databases is highlighted.
