Ventilation and air conditioning systems are the basic prerequisite for the operation of a cleanroom. These must be professionally planned, built, maintained and inspected.
Ventilation and air conditioning systems ensure that:
• Only air with the desired air quality enters the room
• The differential pressure to the neighboring rooms is maintained
• Contaminated room air is removed from the cleanroom
• The employees in the clean room have access to suitable breathing air in accordance with the German Workplace Ordinance (ArbStättV)

The aim is to consider and minimize everything that can contribute to a deterioration in indoor air quality (not just supply air!).
What effects and obligations does VDI 6022 have on the initial use of the cleanroom and what tests and inspections must be carried out in subsequent years?

Among other things, the following is checked:
• Was the system planned professionally from a hygiene point of view?
• Do the planners, the tradesmen carrying out the work and the project managers have the necessary certification in accordance with VDI 6022 category A or B?
• Is the system build as planned?
• Are the right materials used?
• Are the systems accessible for maintenance purposes and is there a maintenance concept?
• The components are visually inspected and the functions tested
• A microbiological examination is carried out using germ samples from surfaces as well as airborne germ measurements of reference air and supply air
• The "cleanliness" of the ducts is checked with a dust surface density measurement
• The optimum conclusion of the initial hygiene inspection is as follows:
o The air conditioning system and the duct system can be operated
o There are no concerns from a hygiene point of view
o The next hygiene inspection according to VDI 6022 must take place in 24 or 36 months

In this lecture the focus is on the initial hygienic inspection. This must be done before the first people use the cleanroom, as the focus here is on protecting people and not products.
