Eine der wesentlichen Neuerungen im revidierten Anhang 1 ist die Forderung nach einer umfassenden und übergeordneten Strategie zur Kontaminationskontrolle (CCS – Contamination Control Strategy). Sie soll die unterschiedlichen Aspekte und die zugehörigen Begleitmaßnahmen erfassen und bewerten, mögliche Wechselwirkungen aufzeigen und eine entsprechende Analyse von Lücken oder Schwachpunkten im System unterstützen. Die CCS ist ein essenzielles Strategiedokument für jegliche pharmazeutische Produktion, insbesondere für die Herstellung von sterilen Arzneimitteln.
