This TechTalk focuses on the conversion of a pharmaceutical water plant from a multi-stage distillation to a membrane-based production of water for injection (WFI). The focus of an ongoing project will be presented, such as: the use of membrane processes, which leads to a significant reduction in the CO2 footprint compared to conventional distillation processes. Furthermore, innovative heat recovery techniques are discussed, including the heating of the cold WFI with the waste heat from hot wastewater and the use of a heat pump system to optimize energy efficiency. In addition, the automatic integrity test of the final ultrafiltration membranes is discussed, which ensures consistently reliable water quality and compliance with regulations. Sustainability and efficiency in WFI production is a key starting point for a greener future of pharmaceutical production.
