High-end production in a pharmaceutical cleanroom

Since 2003, five major expansion stages and several smaller projects - always during ongoing operations - have been implemented with Lorenz Consult. Expansion stage 6 is now following. After the Group approved the investment in June 2019, planning and submissions to the authorities have been completed to such an extent that excavation work could begin in September 2020. Completion is planned for 2023.

This expansion stage will enable Lactosan to double its current production capacity in the final stage.

"In recent years, Lorenz Consult has received an increasing number of inquiries from the animal feed and food industry," explains DI Christian Lorenz, Managing Director of Lorenz Consult in Graz. Cross-contamination-free production in a factory requires precisely defined and sophisticated flows of goods and personnel. "Lorenz Consult's broad range of services and expertise is the basis of our collaboration. Lorenz Consult is prepared to go to the limits of what is feasible in the uncompromising planning and implementation of concepts if it serves the project," describes Dr. Hans Peter Lettner, Managing Director at Lactosan.

Room-in-room concepts are often implemented in order to save investment and energy costs during subsequent operation. The required conditions are not needed in every area of the production process. "When constructing these rooms, the challenge lies in the required quality and impermeability. The building inspectorate must pay attention to this," emphasizes DI Christian Lorenz.

In some areas, the room requirements correspond to those of clean rooms in the pharmaceutical industry. It pays off that Lorenz and his team have already implemented numerous projects in this sector.

Lactosan has made a name for itself as a specialist and service provider and has continuously invested in the company site with buildings for production, laboratories, technical and social rooms, offices including the necessary peripherals for waste water and waste management.

All of this during ongoing operations, always with Lorenz Consult's expertise in state-of-the-art systems and Factory 4.0 with digitalization.

Expansion stage 6 will expand the fermentation and freeze-drying lines. This should enable the company to meet the continuously increasing demand over the next few years. The digital twins for construction, technical building services and the production facilities were created using BIM technology as early as the planning phase. This enabled collisions in areas with a high line density to be identified and rectified at an early stage. This saves time and costs.
