Digitalization has long been a central driver in automation, and terms like “Industry 4.0” are ubiquitous.
This presentation explores how digitalization can be implemented in the generation and distribution of WFI (Water for Injection), with insights from ifm electronic as a sensor manufacturer and EnviroFalk PharmaWaterSystems as a machine builder.
The customer project focuses on IO-Link as a key technology: With decentralized IO-Link masters and intelligent sensors, traditional wiring becomes a thing of the past.
Terminal boxes are eliminated, installation effort is reduced, and all data runs via a single cable directly into the control cabinet.
Valves and pushbuttons can also be efficiently integrated, saving time during assembly and commissioning, and wiring errors are avoided thanks to pre-assembled connection technology.

A special highlight: The ultrasonic flow sensors of type SUH used enable seamless use from drinking water to hot WFI withdrawal—lean, intelligent, and economical.
